“Drafting An Army” Campaign
Drug abuse has swept across the region, indiscriminately affecting lives, families and communities. The “Drafting An Army” anti-drug campaign is designed to enlist students in the war against drugs by raising their awareness of the problem and the negative impact drugs cause on individuals and society.

Through either a day-long or week-long event, schools will focus on drug awareness and prevention activities that are both educational and fun. This campaign is an excellent way to start UNITE Clubs in schools that will continue drug awareness activities throughout the year.

Hal's ArmyA UNITE Coalition’s Education Committee should take the lead in working with school administrators and staff to plan and schedule the campaign for all students. When delegating tasks be sure to get the youth involved. Your school’s substance abuse counselor (middle and high), school liaison (elementary), and parent organization should also be part of the planning process. Invite parents/guardians to participate in the celebration; not only are they a great resource, they represent all segments of your community -- business, civic organizations, law enforcement, emergency medical services, faith-based, government and health care.

Successful “Drafting An Army” campaigns will include:
  • Involvement of students in the decision-making process.
  • Advanced in-school publicity by having students create posters and signs.
  • Notification of your event through local media and inviting media coverage.
  • Provide anti-drug brochures and drug education pamphlets for the students to take home.
  • Invite a person who has suffered negatively from drug abuse or who has lost a loved one due to drug abuse to share their story.
  • Conduct special drug-free theme days.
  • Invite students to dress up in an Army motif.
  • Conduct individual or classroom contests that promote an anti-drug message.
  • Hang a large banner that students can write their own reasons for being drug-free.
  • Conduct school-wide assemblies. These can be used to kick-off a week-long activity, for special speakers, and to celebrate a successful campaign.
  • Start a penny war or walkathon to raise funds for your coalition or a UNITE Club.
  • Have students sign a drug-free pledge agreement. Download a Drug-Free Pledge Certificate.
  • Ask teachers to incorporate drug prevention into regular classroom studies, such as essay contests in English and drug statistics in math).
  • Provide prizes and recognitions for various contests.
  • Hold a drug-free family night event.
