Operation UNITE : Unlawful Narcotics Investigation Treatment and Education
March & Rally Events
One of the most effective ways draw attention to the anti-drug activities in your community and recruit new members for your coalition is to conduct a March & Rally. You will want to include schools and youth groups, civic clubs and organizations, business and industry, government officials, state and local representatives, emergency service personnel, and health care professionals.
Generally, your event will include a short march (about 1 mile) through the downtown or other highly visible area. The march may end at the county courthouse, city hall or community park for a brief rally with speakers. Upon conclusion you could incorporate a picnic with anti-drug displays and live music.
Planning for a March & Rally event will usually require several months in order to coordinate attendance and secure speakers. You may also wish to conduct poster or other contests to spur interest and involvement. Involving the local ministerial association and civic officials is strongly recommended. Your Coalition Coordinator can assist in this process.
Since UNITE began, local coalitions have conducted at least 31 March & Rally events that have drawn an estimated 31,760 people. In addition, two rallies have been held in Frankfort to support anti-drug legislation and two "Ride Against Drug" events conducted in Perry County by Whayne Supply Company to raise funds for treatment.
