UNITE Activities
A program designed to assist Pulaski County families overcome issues such as poverty, addiction and conflict is still in need of additional volunteers. To help reach its goal of mobilizing 100 families/individuals who would be willing to serve as mentors to other families, the Pulaski County Community Transformation Team, in partnership with the Focus on the Family organization, will hold a second training course on Tuesday, January 12.

The Southwestern High School UNITE Club assisted the Pulaski County UNITE Coalition in the recent Rockcastle UNITE Challenge to "Wipe Out Drugs." As part of the October 18 UNITE Bowl football game between Pulaski High and Rockcastle High the two counties collected toilet paper rolls that would be donated to area treatment facilities. Toilet paper was also donated to the Pulaski Coalition from Northern Middle School and Pulaski Central. Local donations were given to the new Oasis facility at Eagle Heights church. Pulaski County High School’s UNITE Club was honored as Operation UNITE’s top high school anti-drug club for the 2007-08 school year. Former club officers and sponsors gathered at the school Thursday, May 21, 2009, to receive the award – which included a trophy and a check for $750 earmarked for club activities next year.

In 2009 Pulaski County, in partnership with the Focus on the Family organization, created a Community Transformation Team. The team is the result of collaborative efforts with the Pulaski County Ministerial Association and Operation UNITE. The team has identified several areas of concern that need a coordinated community effort to properly address and become a thriving community engaged in one united mission. Pulaski County has six registered UNITE Clubs for the 2009-10 school year – Nancy Elementary, Pulaski County High, Shopville Elementary, Somerset Christian School, Southern Elementary and Southwestern High.
The Coalition received funding through Operation UNITE to assist elementary schools develop or expand the National Archery In Schools Program for grades 3-5 during the 2008-09 school year. The project began at Nancy Elementary and has expanded to include Eubank Elementary and Shopville Elementary. Each has an after-school club as well as an introduction in PE classes. More than 200 students have been affected.
A new organization has joined forces with the Pulaski Coalition to promote drug prevention programs for youth. The Teen Outlet Center is for youth ages 14-19. Meetings are conducted monthly on Thursday afternoons. For details contact Carol Huckelby at 606-271-2818 or huck369@gmail.com.
First Baptist Church held a Shoot Hoops Not Drugs basketball camp with Jeff Sheppard on June 6, 2008, to conclude their week-long basketball camp. To view photos Click here.
Pulaski County began a Reformers Unanimous addictions program on February 16, 2007. The group meets weekly at Oak Hill Baptist Church. More than 300 people participated in the program.

Pulaski County High School UNITE Club president Kimberlee Harris won the Tobacco Advocate of the Year award on February 28, 2007, at the Youth Tobacco HOT Conference at The Center For Rural Development. Monday, November 9 - Sherri Estes presented the lastest KIP information at the regular coalition meeting at Rocky Hollow. In addition, the group discussed other drug addiction concerns. The coalition's PSA is scheduled to begin airing towards the end of November.
Tuesday, October 27 - A community forum to discuss the pros and cons of a planned Methadone clinic in Pulaski County was held at in the Fiscal Courtroom located in the courthouse. Dr. Ron Durbin was on hand to present the opposition. Proposed clinic operator Terry Scott was unable attend. Monday, September 21 - Bill Ramage, director of Premier Integrity Solutions School Drug Testing Programs, gave a presentation to parents on the current students drug abuse trends and an orientation on the drug testing process at the Pulaski County High School auditorium. Thursday, September 17 - A "Celebrating Recovery" community rally in observance of National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Month was on the downtown square in Somerset. People in recovery shared their successes and community leaders proclaimed their support. T-shirts were given to the first 75 people. Refreshments were provided by KY-ASAP and Operation UNITE. Wednesday, September 16 - The Cumberland Region UNITE Youth Summit for students in grades 4-12 was held at The Center for Rural Development. The program provided an action-packed day full of positive messages and vital information about avoiding peer pressure, leadership and creating/maintaining anti-drug UNITE clubs in your school.

Saturday, June 13 - More than 200 people attended a Neighborhood Watch block party held at High Street Baptist Church. The event included neighborhood fellowship, games, face painting, live music, balloon man, karaoke, child ID, biycle safety, door prizes, food and drinks. The event was co-sponsored by the Pulaski UNITE Coalition, High Street Baptist Church and Somerset Police Department.
