UNITE Activities
Operation UNITE coalition volunteers and students from across the Fifth Congressional District were honored Friday, November 9, 2007, for outstanding efforts during the past year. More than 800 people attended the program, held at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.

Hazard Community and Technical College has established drug education and information centers on each of its four campuses. These centers provide information about support groups, drugs, treatment options and Operation UNITE. Training materials are available to students, faculty and staff in the HCTC library. Currently hundreds of people have benefitted from the materials.
In October 2008 the coalition completed 410 Core Community College Alcohol and Drug Surveys as part of a "social normning" campaign. Surveys have been submitted for processing. For details contact Helen Brunty at 606-487-3077.

Perry County’s UNITE Coalition has focused their support on working closely with those in recovery through Lifeline and the Perry Drug Court. The coalition provided Drug Court participants a food basket containing all the ingredients for a Christmas Dinner in 2007.
The Perry County Drug Court program has received a SAMSHA grant of $350,000 in each of the next three years (2009-2011) to provide enhanced treatment to participants.
Perry County has three registered UNITE Clubs during the 2009-10 school year – Leatherwood Elementary (grades 3-5), Leatherwood Elementary (grades 6-8) and Perry County Central High/Youth Services Center.
The Perry County Central UNITE Club has been very involved with anti-drug activities and sent a large number of students to be trained for the Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs® program. To view pictures from a fall 2006 fishing trip click here.
Perry County has five Lifeline groups: Concerned Persons at Airport Gardens Baptist Church and Combs United Methodist Church; and Drug and Alcohol Recovery at CommonBond Christian Fellowship, Combs United Methodist Church and Airport Gardens Baptist Church.

Wednesday, November 4 - A Prescription Drug Diversion and Methamphetamine Lab Training was conducted at the Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center in Hazard by Kentucky NADDI Chapter, Operation UNITE and Appriss.
Tuesday, September 15 - Kentucky River Regional UNITE Youth Summit for students (grades 4-12) was held in Hazard. Program provided an action-packed day full of positive messages and vital information about avoiding peer pressure, leadership and creating/maintaining anti-drug UNITE clubs in your school.

Thursday, September 10 - A presentation on methamphetamine lab awareness was held at The Forum in Hazard. This detailed program was intended for community groups, social workers and anyone who may be exposed to a lab and the effects on children living within a home where a lab is present. Wednesday, July 15 - The second of three regional National Archery in the Schools Program Beginning Archery Instructor training courses wased by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park.

Thursday, May 21 - A methamphetamine awareness class was presented to members of the Hazard Police Department.
Thursday, May 14 - The Perry County Drug Court held a graduation for participants. Doug Abner from the Clay County coalition was the guest speaker.
Tuesday, March 17 - The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) team from A.B. Combs Elementary School competed in the state championships.

January 29 - A billboard contest was held at Perry County schools for a billboard design. The winning design for April was created by Christopher Williams from R. W. Combs Elementary. He received a 4 GB MP3 player. It will be displayed near Pizza Hut. Williams' explaination about the meaning of the design: "The school represents the education I want to earn. The books represent my knowledge of bad drugs. I feel that being drug free will give me a better education which will lead to a brighter future. The cap represents the high school graduation I want to go to. The pencil represents the drugs I want to erase from history and this represents why I am drug free." 2008 Activities
Saturday, October 4 - UNITE Bowl football games featuring youth in grades 5-8 from across Eastern Kentucky, including Hazard were held at the Leslie County High School Eagle Field. For complete schedule and more information about the event click here.
Saturday-Sunday, August 23-24 - UNITE presented a class on methamphetamine at the regional fire school to be held in Hazard. There were 22 participants in the class each day.
Saturday, June 7 - The Perry Coalition conducted a How to Drug-Proof Your Kids training at the UK Center for Rural Health. The event was a success, and another training date will be conducted at the end of June at Hazard Community and Technical College's Hazard Campus. Thursday, April 3 - A presentation on methamphetamine was given to juniors and seniors in the Career Options class at Buckhorn High School. For details contact David Wheeler at 606-348-7176.

Friday, December 14 - The Perry County Adult Drug Court held a Christmas dinner for all their clients and families. Gifts were provided for children by the Hazard Lions Club.
