UNITE Activities
  • Magoffin County has one registered UNITE Club in 2009-10 school year – Salyersville Grade School.

  • An after-school research-based program was conducted each week during the 2008-09 school year. An estimated 250 people are affected by the project, which provides continuous monitoring of at-risk students.

  • Middle school students created designs for an anti-drug billboard that was posted above a tobacco outlet store in May 2008. An estimate 11,000 people view the message on a daily basis. The "Project Alert" has been very successful since it began in July 2007.

  • MHSThe Magoffin County Health Department was recently awarded a $100,000 Kentucky Drug Free Community grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The funding will be used to further anti-drug efforts in the county.

  • Monday, August 17 - Twenty people face criminal charges after a year-long drug investigation in Magoffin County.

  • Friday-Saturday, July 25-26 - More than 500 teenagers and adults were impacted by the Worship in the Wilderness project. Participants heard unbelievable messages of hope and three different testimonies concerning the battles of addiction and the steps to change. For details contact Lori Franklin.

  • Friday, June 5 - Project graduation provided a safe, drug-free event for students.
  • Wednesday, May 6 - A resource fair was held to provide public awareness of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
  • Monday, April 6 - A presentation on prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse was given at the Teen Scene in Salyersville. For information contact Carolyn Isaac at 606-349-5483 or carolyns.isaac@ky.gov.

  • Thursday, March 19 - A graduation ceremony for two participants of the Letcher Drug Court was held. Kentucky Court of Appeals Chief Judge Sara Combs and Deputy Chief Justice Will T. Scott were guest speakers.

  • Saturday, January 24 - A 3-on-3 basketball tournament was conducted.

  • Monday, December 15 - Local board meeting for KY-ASAP/Drug-Free Communities was held at the Teen Scene. For details contact Carolyn Isaac at 606-349-5483 or carolyns.isaac@ky.gov.

  • Wednesday, November 12 - A graduation ceremony was held for participants in the Magoffin County Drug Court program.

  • Monday-Friday, October 27-31 - Substance abuse prevention awareness was provided to approximately 1,535 youth dudring Red Ribbon Week.

  • Saturday, October 4 - UNITE Bowl football games featuring youth in grades 5-8 from across Eastern Kentucky, including Magoffin County were held at the Leslie County High School Eagle Field. For complete schedule and more information about the event click here.

  • Wednesday, September 24 - A back-to-school bash was conducted that increased high school youth participation in after-school activities.

  • Friday, May 30 - The Magoffin County Drug Court held a graduation ceremony at the Magoffin County Justice Center in Salyersville.

  • Thursday, May 15 - SALYERSVILLE (05-15-2008) – An eight-month undercover investigation into illegal drug trafficking in Magoffin County resulted in arrest warrants for 21 individuals on 45 charges. In addition, a large moonshine operation was discovered and two other individuals were arrested on drug charges.

  • Monday, April 14 - Operation UNITE participated in a town hall meeting to help prevent underage drinking at the Teen Scene in Salyersville. Refreshments were served For details contact Drug-Free Communities Coordinator Carolyn Isaac at 606-349-5483 or carolyn.issac@ky.gov.

  • 2007 Activities
  • November-December - Approximately 150 youth participated in drug and alcohol-free events.

  • Thursday, December 13 - The Magoffin County Drug Court participants and their families joined the Knott County participants for a Christmas party at the Sportsplex in Hindman.
