Harlan County's Henry Hughes was recently honored as a Teacher Who Made A Difference. The program is sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Education to recognize educators who have made a positive impact on the lives of their students. Nominees can be teachers, professors, principals or other educational professionals. Hughes was selected as one of approximately 100 honorees for the 2007 class because of his tireless efforts in bringing a drug-free message to the students of SKCTC-Cumberland as a member of the campus coalition, for his highly successful direction of the area's HOFNOD program, and his continuing leadership of the United For Jesus program in Cumberland. Hughes was named the Operation UNITE "Mentor of the Year" for 2006 for his total dedication and support for the youth of Harlan County. He was nominated for the award by UNITE Coalition Coordinator Tom Vicini. The award was presented in Lexington on April 28.
