UNITE Activities
  • There were 73 participants in the Shoot Hoops Not Drugs basketball camp held at South Floyd High School on June 23, 2009. These youth represented Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Martin and Rowan counties. Winners of portable basketball goals were 14-year-old Dakota Justice of Abner Mountain in Wheelwright and 15-year-old Josh Akers of Wheelwright.

  • The Floyd, Johnson and Pike UNITE coalitions held a bass fishing tournament on September 30, 2006, to raise funding for youth programs and promote awareness of their coalitions. For pictures click here.

  • Floyd County has seven registered UNITE Clubs in 2009-10 school year – Allen Elementary, Allen Middle, Betsy Layne High, J.D. Adams Middle, John M. Stumbo Elementary, John M. Stumbo Middle, and Prestonsburg Elementary.

  • On July 6, 2006, UNITE Pike and the Floyd County UNITE Coalition began a partnership with Gearheart Communications to air informational programs on public access television stations. The live broadcast -- called "Sound Advice: The UNITE Hour" -- is shown on WPRG Channel 5 in Harold from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continues on the first Thursday of each month. A call-in question and answer session is featured along with special monthly guests. The program is made available to other cable TV providers in the two counties that are not covered by Inner Mountain Cable.

  • During the first half of 2009 Lifeline of Floyd County offered 16 faith-based support groups each week. In addition, two trainings were held for support group facilitators. Participants in these meetings receive a Recovery Bible that accompanies the Twelve Step program. Lifeline works with Drug Court, Family Court, Kentucky Alternative Program, the Lane House and a ministry at the Floyd County Detention Center. For details contact Shirley W. Combs.

  • Facilitators are currently being sought for the Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs (HOFNOD) program. If you are interested or need more information contact Carol Jo May at 606-285-6692.

  • Thursday, March 18 - Second of six regional UNITE Coalition training sessions for anyone interested in making a difference within their community, 5 p.m. at the Big Sandy ADD, 100 Resource Drive, in Prestonsburg.   • Thursday, September 17 - Big Sandy Regional UNITE Youth Summit for students (grades 4-12) was held in Prestonsburg. Program provided an action-packed day full of positive messages and vital information about avoiding peer pressure, leadership and creating/maintaining anti-drug UNITE clubs in your school.

  • Tuesday, July 14 - The first of three regional National Archery in the Schools Program Beginning Archery Instructor training courses was held by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources at Memorial Gymnasium at Hazard High School.

  • Tuesday, June 23 - There were 73 participants in the Shoot Hoops Not Drugs camp held at South Floyd High School on June 23.   • Thursday, May 28 - A community education forum sponsored by the Floyd County UNITE Coalition was held at the Mud Creek Senior Citizens Center in Grethel. Presentation included a panel discussion including law enforcement issues related to the drug problem. For details contact Mike Vance, chairman of the Citizens Against Drug Abuse, at 606-226-2075.
