Approximately 45 children attended the Safe and Drug-Free Halloween party.

George Roe from the West Van Lear Fire Department showed a safety film geared toward kids entitled "Ready With Freddie," then held a question and answer session with prizes for correct responses.
Bob Morrison, chairman of the West Van Lear Neighbors UNITED, took a few minutes to welcome everyone, thanked those who helped, and explained to everyone about the NU group and invited everyone to participate. He showed an example of the decals which Operation UNITE has provided for participating members.
Chris Ratliff and Gail Campbell did a great job organizing the party. They had several games lined up for the kids, including a ring toss, music walk and Halloween BINGO. Prizes were awarded to the winners.
Several community members made cookies, brownies, fudge and other snacks to be served along with pizza from Papa John's.
Prizes were donated by the Johnson County UNITE Coalition, Christian Appalachian Project, and Words and Stuff Bookstore. The postmaster also donated a couple of framed "Superhero" stamp sheets.
A "Guess the number of pieces of candy in a jar" contest was won by Whitney Rohr.
Jaxson Ratliff and Keegan Clark were winners of a coloring contest that the post office had sponsored in October.
