Concurrent Sessions

Three concurrent workshop sessions will be offered at 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:45 a.m. Conference participants can attend two of the three sessions.

Session A -- "Creating Connections That Count" by Ty Sells from Youth to Youth International in Columbus, Ohio. Quality, accurate, relevant information isn’t enough to inspire students to learn. Adults must first establish a connection. This fun, interactive program covers such topics as: 1) attitudes toward youth, 2) the five KEYSS to connecting with youth, and 3) the do’s and don’ts of working with young people.

Session B -- "A Silent Epidemic: Kids and Pharmaceutical Abuse" by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Shannon Argetsinger from Columbia, South Carolina. Discussion of popular influences upon youth drug use, pharmaceutical drug use trends, and community-based strategies to counteract the impact of pharmaceutical abuse. Interactive program designed to promote awareness and stimulate the development of a strategic community response.

Session C -- "The Importance of the Continuum of Care in Maintaining Sobriety for those in Recovery" by Erdil Looney, director of WestCare Kentucky's treatment center in Pike County. Program discusses what happens during treatment, the importance of after-care, obstacles faced by those in recovery, and ways the community can assist with successful transitions.

Youth Program

"Activities of a Youth Leadership Group" by members of the Pike Youth Leadership Council. This dynamic group comprised of high school students has set the standard for involving their peers in programs that make a positive difference in their schools and community. This program is sure to inspire and motivate.

Keynote Address

"Making a Difference: UNITE Inspires Northeast Georgia Community" by Pastor Mike England, co-founder of the Tri-State Christian Center with his wife, DeDe, Morgantown, Georgia; and Judge Brenda S. Weaver, Chief Superior Court Judge in the Appalachian Judicial District, Jasper, Georgia. Think you aren’t making an impact? The UNITE model has been shared with communities throughout the nation ... and world! Fannin County in Northern Georgia has embraced and implemented the total concept. And they’ve done it without federal funding. Their first-ever march and rally in August 2006 drew nearly 3,000 people. This caught a lot of people’s attention and inspired others to get involved. In April, three surrounding counties held back-to-back rallies attracting approximately 8,000 folks. Their efforts were bolstered by Judge Weaver, who challenged all the churches to join the anti-drug efforts.
