Event: Shoot Hoops Not Drugs basketball camps
Date: June and July 2008 (see below)
Time: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day
Location:

Through July 22, 2008, there have been 935 youth participate in 6 camps. These youth represented 31 Kentucky counties and 4 other states.

• Thursday, June 12 - Johnson Central High School, Paintsville. Camp was attended by 160 youth representing 8 counties (Floyd, Harlan, Harrison, Johnson, Lawrence, Martin, Morgan and Pike). Basketball goal winners were 4-year-old Alyssa Varney of Belfry and 15-year-old Nathan Akers of Johnson County.

• Tuesday, June 24 - Letcher Central High School, Whitesburg. Camp was attended by 169 youth representing 2 counties (Boyd, Fayette, Harlan, Knott, Letcher and Perry) and 2 other states (Florida and Tennessee). Basketball goal winners were 10-year-old Zac Jones of Whitesburg and 12-year-old Jamie Billiter of Payne Gap.

• Thursday, June 26 - Wolfe County High School, Campton. Camp was attended by 213 youth representing 7 counties (Clark, Lee, Menifee, Morgan, Powell Rowan and Wolfe). Basketball goal winners were 4-year-old Carly Creech of Rogers and 9-year-old Abby Kenney of Morehead.

• Tuesday, July 8 - Owsley County High School, Booneville. Camp was attended by 56 youth representing 6 counties (Harlan, Jackson, Lee, Owsley, Perry and Powell) and 1 other state (Georgia). Basketball goal winners were sisters 13-year-old Too Daniel and 12-year-old Blue Daniel of Booneville.

• Thursday, July 10 - Barbourville High School, Barbourville. Camp was attended by 119 youth representing 7 counties (Bell, Clay, Harlan, Knox, Laurel, Perry and Whitley) and 1 other state (Georgia). Basketball goal winners were 13-year-old Raygan Hendricks of Evarts and 14-year-old Travis Mills of Heidrick.

• Tuesday, July 22 - Wayne County High School, Monticello. Camp was attended by 218 youth representing 5 counties (Clinton, McCreary, Monroe, Pulaski and Wayne) and 1 other state (Washington). Basketball goal winners were 6-year-old Shiana Honeycutt of the Sand Hill community in McCreary County and 9-year-old Jennifer Sawyer of Monticello.

Jeff Sheppard, a highly acclaimed former basketball player at the University of Kentucky, will conduct six free one-day regional basketball camps this summer in the Fifth Congressional District. The Shoot Hoops Not Drugs Tour will teach school-age youth fundamental basketball skills while emphasizing the importance for them to stay drug-free.

Pre-registration is NOT required.

Participants should wear comfortable shirt, shorts and closed-toe sneakers.

SouthEast Telephone will be providing free hotdogs and water at each of the camps.

All participants will receive a free event T-shirt and special Shoot Hoops Not Drugs basketball. In addition, 2 participants will win portable basketball goals to be given away at the conclusion of each camp.

During the past two years 15 regional basketball camps have been held. These camps were attended by 1,914 participants from 46 Kentucky counties and 10 other states and 1 other country.
